Witch Littles
children's book

Lilly Warren

by Laurie Lamson

Synopsis
The determined little witches of "Witch Littles" are almost the opposite of "Harry Potter". They use strictly low-tech magic as they learn witchcraft in their own backyard. In the process, they discover we all could use a little encouragement to grow and blossom, just like the plants and flowers in their mother's garden.

5. Grace Barks

Later that day the Olive twins found Artemis and Grace leaning over Agatha's shoulder as she read aloud from the book,
"'A dog is a man of the office or a man of the hour
but a dog is not really a man
even if a dog swings on a vine like Tarzan.
he falls off because he's a dog.
Remember, a dog is not a man
A dog fetches a stick, he barks at a car
A dog only thinks he behaves like a star

Julia Sommer
A dog doesn't pretend, he shows his feelings... everyone knows what a wagging tail means'..."
"What are you doing?" interrupted Lilly.
"Hi Lilly, hi Reno," Artemis waved them over.
"I told you, I changed my name to Peace," said Lilly.
Reno circled her finger around her ear - indicating that she thought her sister was cuckoo. Lilly could be a hippy if she wanted, but Reno didn't have to encourage her.
"This book's got magic spells in it," Agatha flipped the book closed to show her the cover. Lilly read a loud, "'The Magic Formula' - cool, a witch book...".
"She's trying to turn me into a dog," Grace informed them. "But it won't work."
"Don't you believe in magic?" asked Lilly.
"Shh," hissed Agatha. "I'm concentrating." She reopened the book and continued reading. "Okay, everyone knows what a wagging tail means But what's to stop him from wagging it elsewhere?
"'A dog is a dog isn't that clear?
A dog is a dog, don't try to change him,
    he's man's best friend, not necessarily woman's.'"
Everyone was focused on the book in Agatha's hands and didn't notice that Grace had fallen back on her heels. The way she was holding up her hands, well, they looked a lot like paws.
The observant Reno noticed first and tapped Agatha on the shoulder to get her attention. Agatha turned to look just as Grace gave a loud exhale, more of a pant really, and hung her tongue out of her mouth. As Artemis also turned to see what everyone was staring at, Grace barked.
Agatha threw a stick. Grace scooted after it - on all fours. Artemis and Agatha exchanged an amazed look as Grace picked up the stick in her mouth. Reno stared in disbelief, Lilly in awe, as Grace hurried back with the stick between her teeth. She dropped it at Agatha's feet. Then she sat back and scratched behind one ear and shook her head from side to side.
No one knew what to say. So Artemis finally broke the silence by singing out, "My dog has fleas!"
